This horse featured in this painting is thinner than what's usually seen in Xu's other works. The horses skinny because at the time when the painting was finished, China was in mire of the war of resistance against Japan, and skinnier horses demonstrated the painters frustration and love for the country.
However, the horse at the front still keeps its head up, signifying the painter's confidence in winning war against fascism.
